LOKOJA — More than 180 inmates and correctional officers at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre received comprehensive health evaluations on Friday, September 25, 2026, following the deployment of a state-sponsored mobile medical outreach program.
The intervention, spearheaded by the Kogi State Ministry of Health under the directive of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, delivered basic medical screenings, diagnostic evaluations, and specialized testing aimed at safeguarding public health within correctional facilities across the state.
A medical delegation led by Dr. Komolafe deployed portable digital X-ray units equipped with artificial intelligence diagnostic software to screen for tuberculosis and other chest-related ailments. Clinical staff also gathered biological samples for secondary laboratory analysis to catch chronic or latent conditions early.
The medical support drew immediate praise from facility staff and detainees alike.
“I thought the world had forgotten me, but today Ododo has reminded me that I am not forgotten,” said one inmate, reflecting on the outreach.
Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adams Abdulazeez, highlighted the exercise as part of a broader mandate to ensure vulnerable and custodial populations are not excluded from primary healthcare delivery. He noted that the initiative complements ongoing correctional service reforms championed at the national level by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Commending the cooperation of correctional authorities and inmates during the operation, Dr. Abdulazeez confirmed that the ministry intends to sustain the mobile clinical model and expand screenings to custodial centres throughout Kogi State in the coming weeks.
