IBADAN — Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the United Nations (UN) and international human rights bodies to conduct an independent investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, asserting that Nigerians deserve a full account of the incident.

The governor made the appeal during a statewide broadcast shortly after the rescued victims were reunited with their families at the Government House in Ibadan. According to Makinde, the circumstances surrounding both the abduction and the eventual rescue are too grave to be examined solely by domestic institutions.

The Call for Transparency and Accountability

Governor Makinde emphasized that the push for an international probe is vital to uncover the whole truth, including any potential internal compromises.

“The Nigerian people therefore deserve a full, transparent, and credible account of what happened, who was responsible, whether there were institutional failures, negligence, or collusion at any level, and what measures must now be taken to ensure that no community is ever subjected to such a tragedy again,” Makinde stated.

He argued that seeking international scrutiny is not meant to undermine Nigeria's institutions, but rather to reinforce public trust and ensure that anyone found culpable—regardless of their office, influence, or affiliation—is held fully accountable.

While making his demands, the governor clarified that he recognizes national security as the responsibility of the Federal Government. He commended President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the police, and the Amotekun Corps for their collaborative efforts in the rescue operation.

Pushback from the Presidency and Senate

The governor's request for international intervention has generated significant controversy at the federal level.

The Presidency heavily criticized the proposal, describing it as unnecessary and politically motivated. Federal officials insisted that Nigeria's security agencies handled the crisis and the subsequent rescue mission with the utmost professionalism.

Similarly, the Nigerian Senate rejected Makinde’s call, maintaining that the Oriire school abduction is strictly a domestic security matter. Lawmakers stated that any required investigations should be handled exclusively by Nigerian authorities, rather than international bodies.

The 56-Day Captivity and a Hero's Sacrifice

The ordeal began on May 15, 2026, when armed assailants invaded schools in the Oriire Local Government Area, abducting students and their teachers. The victims spent a harrowing 56 days in captivity before being freed in a coordinated, military-led rescue operation.

Tragically, the successful rescue mission came at a heavy cost. Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, a 28-year-old military officer, lost his life while fighting to free the hostages. He has since been buried with full military honours, remembered for his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
