The Legend of Obege: The Mystic of Ancient Eika

Long before the laws of modern science dictated what was possible, magic was simply a way of life. In the heart of ancient Eika—one of our proud ancestral communities—a boy was born who would blur the lines between humanity and the divine. His name was Obege.

The Boy Born with a Destiny

In a time when the world was young, a child was born into a respected family of Eika hunters. But this was no ordinary birth. Legend has it that Obege came into the world clutching a single leaf in his tiny hand. To the elders, this was a powerful omen: the boy was destined to be a master healer, a mystic whose ties to nature were forged before he even took his first breath.

As a child, Obege’s older kinsmen often left him behind with the women when they embarked on their hunting expeditions. They argued he was too young and fragile for the unforgiving forest. Yet, time and time again, the hunters would trek deep into the wilderness only to find young Obege already there, sitting peacefully by a fire, roasting game he had caught entirely unarmed. The elders quickly realized they were in the presence of a prodigy.

Master of the Elements

As Obege grew into a man, his fame echoed across the land. He possessed an innate magic—he didn't consult spirits or perform dark rituals; the universe simply bent to his will. He cured the incurable and tamed the weather itself.

On one notoriously scorching day during the dry season, with a cloudless white sky overhead, Obege sat on an upturned wooden mortar in front of his clansmen. With a simple command, he summoned the heavens to open. A heavy, torrential downpour instantly drenched the village and everyone in it. Yet, when the rain finally ceased, Obege remained seated on his mortar, as dry as gunpowder.

The Stairway to the Heavens

Obege’s greatest public spectacle defied gravity centuries before modern science even gave it a name. One afternoon at the bustling village market, he produced a simple spindle of weaving yarn.

Holding one end of the thread, he tossed the spindle high into the air. Instead of falling back down, the spindle continued to ascend, stretching endlessly into the sky until it vanished from sight, leaving a single vertical thread hanging in mid-air.

Then, to the absolute bewilderment of the crowd, Obege began to climb. Like a spider gliding up a gossamer web, he ascended the thread higher and higher into the clouds. He shrank into a tiny speck and eventually disappeared completely into space. The yarn dropped to the earth, leaving the villagers staring at an empty sky.

A Grave of Solid Rock

Obege eventually lived out his days, but even in death, he remained extraordinary. Before his passing, he led his kinsmen to a rocky clearing surrounded by a thick bamboo forest and declared it his final resting place.

When the great mystic finally passed, his people carried his body to the chosen spot. But as they stood over the solid stone, they were utterly befogged. How does one dig a grave into a solid rock? Reluctantly, they set his body down and went to fetch heavy mattocks to chip away at the stone.

Before they could even strike the ground, a deafening rumble shook the earth. The solid rock cleft open directly beneath the corpse. As the elders watched in shock, Obege’s body slipped into the gaping abyss. With a resounding crack, the stone walls snapped shut, sealing seamlessly as if the earth had never opened at all.

The Forbidden Mask and the Ultimate Price

Though Obege was gone, his spirit remained deeply intertwined with the ancestral traditions. His kinsmen successfully summoned his spirit from the rock to embody the sacred Ododo masquerade. However, Obege had left one strict final warning: His masquerade costume must never be kept in a human house; it belonged on the rock where he was buried.

Furthermore, the ancient masquerade cult held a strict taboo regarding the mysterious bundle stitched inside the mask. The custodian—the man who would wear the mask—was forbidden from ever "looking up" at the bundle while fully enveloped inside the costume.

Tragically, human curiosity and carelessness prevailed. After parading the great man's spirit through the community, the elders returned to the burial rock. As the custodian was removing the mask, he broke the sacred rule and looked up at the forbidden bundle.

The consequences were instantaneous and terrifying. With a violent swishing sound, the entire costume was violently whisked off the custodian's body. The elders watched helplessly as the mystical garment flew through the air, traveling southeast until it draped itself perfectly over a massive black rock.

The custodian collapsed to the ground, lifeless.

He became the first major casualty in the history of the traditional masquerade cult—a chilling reminder to future generations that while Obege’s magic was a gift to his people, his warnings were never to be ignored.
